18-Wheeler Crashes, Killing One Person In San Antonio

An 18-wheeler lost control and flipped over on San Antonio’s east side on Jan. 5. 2023. The semi-truck caught fire. One person is reported dead.

This accident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. on the ramp from Loop 410 to southbound Interstate 35.

Police are investigating the reason why the truck driver lost control of the vehicle and overturned on its side. It was confirmed that the truck immediately caught fire. A police sergeant witnessed the accident. He saw the 18 – wheeler lose control on the southbound lanes. It all happened near Binz-Engleman Road. This police sergeant and the witnesses were the first on the scene.

Two people were in the 18-wheeler at the moment of the crash. As a result of the quick reaction of the police sergeant and witnesses, the driver was saved. People at the scene tried to put out the fire and pull out the other person in the vehicle. At the moment of the crash, the passenger was unconscious and rescuers were unable to pull him out. The passenger of the truck who remained inside has not been identified.

Competent rescue services arrived at the scene soon after and were working to extricate the second passenger. The 18-wheeler driver suffered only minor injuries, which were treated immediately after an on-site medical examination.

This truck carried spools of metal cable, which made it very heavy. It is known that it is a commercial truck, but it is not known for which company it worked.

The police closed the ramp after the accident. The cause of the accident is under investigation and the road is being cleared. The ramp will be closed until Thursday evening when it is expected to open and normalize traffic. Besides the ramp, police also closed the southbound access road to I-35 to traffic.

All motorists are asked to choose another route and avoid this part of the road.

The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) is on the scene, investigating the case. The cause of the accident in which the 18-wheeler flips and burns, killing one person is still unknown.
