BOISE, ID – On December 22, 2020, at around 8:46 a.m. a two-vehicle fatality crash was reported and investigated by Idaho State Police.
The accident happened when a 2007 Mazda B2300 pickup truck, driven by John Wheeler, 67, of Boise which was heading westbound on I-84, crossed into the eastbound lanes.
At the same time, a Peterbilt semi-truck, driven by Christian Giesbrecht, 44, of Pocatello was driving on the eastbound lane. The pickup collided with the Peterbilt and came to a stop in the median. The semi-truck came to a stop on the off-ramp of the eastbound lane of I-84.
Officials suspect the crash was caused by icy roads. The Idaho State Police said that the road was “extremely slick and ice-covered.”
Both Wheeler and Giesbrecht were wearing seatbelts. Wheeler died from his injuries at the scene of the accident.
The crash led to the eastbound lane being blocked by emergency vehicles for nearly two hours.
